What Krone readers had already known since Wednesday morning was officially confirmed a few hours later. ÖVP Finance Minister Magnus Brunner is to become the new EU Commissioner. Which former minister was considered a serious alternative, which portfolio Austria could receive and what else the Greens were able to negotiate.

Almost exactly one month before the deadline and yet much later than expected, the black-green federal government agreed to nominate ÖVP Finance Minister Magnus Brunner for the red-white-red EU Commissioner ticket. An agreement in principle is said to have been reached in a final round of negotiations on Tuesday evening. Green Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler slept on it once more and then finally gave the green thumbs up on Wednesday morning.
