Against the U.S. and China

Six Mega-Mergers Are Set to Propel Europe Forward

They are the new giants of the global economy: Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Alphabet. Together, these four U.S. corporations are worth nearly as much on the stock market as the 600 largest European companies combined. An alarming sign—and a wake-up call for Brussels.

While the U.S. is charging ahead with aggressive trade policies and China is aggressively subsidizing its own industries—such as artificial intelligence and raw materials—Europe is lagging behind. The EU’s economic growth has trailed far behind the two superpowers over the past decade (see chart). “As a European, you feel the pressure between East and West more strongly today than ever before,” says Austrian Mike Doustdar, CEO of the Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk. Now the EU is responding.

Brussels now wants to facilitate more large-scale takeovers so that “European champions” can compete with the giants from the U.S. and China. Six mega-mergers could propel the continent forward.
