“Require those unfit for civilian service”

Astrid Mair (ÖVP), the Tyrolean state councillor responsible for civilian service and the job market, has made a bold move to counter the shortage of workers, particularly in the social sector. The politician is calling on the federal government to revise the Military Service Act.

"Unfortunately, the number of young lads who are deemed unfit for military service is on the rise. This means that they are not only exempt from basic military service, but also from civilian service. Anyone who is classified as unfit for military service should have to do their civilian service - with only minor restrictions. This is precisely why I see great potential for the future in compulsory civilian service," explains Mair in response to an inquiry from Krone.
