Who invented it?
The dispute over butter chicken is so heated
It is a must on every Indian restaurant menu in this country: Murgh makhani, better known as butter chicken. There is widespread agreement on the ingredients needed for this tender chicken dish in a spicy tomato sauce - but not on who invented it. Two Indian restaurant chains have been battling in the Delhi High Court since January to clarify this question - with "spicy" evidence.
Legend has it that the dish was invented by migrants from Peshawar, Pakistan, who opened a restaurant called Moti Mahal in Delhi, India, in 1947. Now a franchise chain with over 100 branches worldwide, Moti Mahal prides itself on having invented the dishes Tandoori Chicken, Dal Makahni and the famous Butter Chicken.
However, the latter is also claimed by the Daryaganj chain, which is much smaller with only ten restaurants and is primarily based in New Delhi. But which of the two companies is right?
