"Micro-cheating"
When you cheat on your partner “just a little bit”
Can you cheat on your partner "just a little"? "Micro-cheating" is the name given to the phenomenon where you never physically cheat, but secretly write to someone, use a false name on your cell phone or use dating apps. But is this really cheating or just harmless flirting?
Suddenly Susanne noticed that her partner Philipp was smiling and looking at his cell phone screen a lot. He came home from work in a great mood and spent more time in front of the mirror in the morning styling himself. "I quickly suspected that he was cheating on me," says the Upper Austrian. When confronted with the accusations, Philipp admitted: Yes, there was a new work colleague he was flirting with. But he doesn't understand the excitement - after all, nothing ever happened. Susanne sees it differently: "I think the flirting and the messages alone are a breach of trust!"
What Philipp has done is what is known as micro-cheating. Australian psychologist Melanie Schilling coined the term and even goes so far as to say: "You can cheat on your partner without even realizing it!"
