Divorce: This is the situation with child maintenance

After a divorce, both parents are generally obliged to support their children. But how exactly is it divided up, who pays and who does what? Divorce expert Maria Christina Kolar-Syrmas knows the answer.

If spouses get divorced, they still remain parents. This means that both mother and father are obliged to pay maintenance. "After the divorce, the parent who primarily cares for the child fulfills their maintenance obligation in kind," explains lawyer Maria Christina Kolar-Syrmas. The other parent fulfills their maintenance obligation by paying money to the other parent or, in the case of adult children, to the child themselves.
