New Supreme Court ruling: when storm victims go away empty-handed

Thousands of Austrians have been hit hard by storms again this year - houses, fields and cars have been badly damaged by mud and water. A case from Carinthia shows how difficult it often is for those affected to get compensation for their damage, once again bringing to light the pitfalls and loopholes in insurance law.

On June 2, 2022, a so-called supercell sweeps across parts of Carinthia, bringing heavy rain and hail, causing more than 300 firefighting operations and millions in damage to buildings and agriculture. Fields and buildings are flooded, including those of a farmer - after two years of struggle, it is now clear that he is going away empty-handed despite having insurance. How can that be?
