Politicians' salaries are like salaries in communist countries: Their equal level and their detachment from any measurable performance encourage the danger of slovenliness and idleness. In addition, elected politicians are protected at least for the duration of a legislative term; and if a representative is already at the end of his or her career and not just at the beginning, the temptation to enjoy the dolce vita in the House of Representatives probably grows all the more.
