AI school: “No more checking homework”

Artificial intelligence is not on the rise, it's here - so that pupils are not helplessly at its mercy, they learn in AI pilot schools how to use the new technology sensibly. After all, it's not just what we learn, but also how we learn that changes over time. What impact AI is having on everyday school life - and how teachers are reacting.

"Banning artificial intelligence - that's not feasible," says Hubert Lutnik, Director of HTL Mössingerstraße in Klagenfurt. And he is right, as a number of teachers tell us: "All homework is written with AI" or "Students often don't realize that AI delivers incorrect results" - comments like these are not uncommon. That's why, as one teacher from Villach told the Kärntner Krone newspaper: "The children want to and should know how to use AI."

This is precisely why 100 schools in Austria (see interactive graphic below) have been selected to test AI software and gain experience in order to teach pupils how to use this rapidly developing technology. The University of Graz is providing scientific support for the project and other schools will benefit from the results. But what does that actually mean? How is the use of AI incorporated into lessons - in all subjects or only in some? And how will the lessons take place?
