Biometrics on board: do smart weapons save lives?

The USA and its weapons - a seemingly never-ending story. However, so-called smart guns with integrated fingerprint scanners and facial recognition could now herald a new chapter in this story. The first models are set to come onto the market this year. However, skepticism is high.

"USA: Teenager shot for ringing wrong bell", "Young woman chose wrong driveway: Shot!" or "USA: Dog shot his master with gun" - headlines like these regularly spill over from the USA to Austria, but only reflect a fraction of the tragedies that occur there every day as a result of gun violence. According to figures from the Gun Violence Archive, more than 13,100 people fell victim to gun violence between January and the end of April. And the year is still young.
