The civil war in Syria has flared up again in recent days. Krone+ clarifies the most important questions: Who is fighting against whom, what role do Israel and the West play and what impact will a weakening of the Assad regime have on Austria?

In order to understand the new conflict in Syria, it is necessary to take a look at the past: In 2011, the opposition launched an uprising against the then leader Assad. In the two years that followed, more and more radical Islamist forces came to power in the opposition. When jihadists from the Gulf States also joined the civil war, it spiraled completely out of control. It was precisely during this phase that the Islamic State (IS) was founded.
