The alarm bells are ringing even louder in the east of Austria: but the shortage of doctors is also affecting Salzburg. And this is despite the fact that the number of doctors has risen in all areas in ten years. 

The symptoms have been well known for years: Months-long waiting times for appointments with specialists, long delays before operations, full outpatient clinics. And often the only option for patients is to go to an elective doctor, where they usually have to pay very high fees. According to doctors, the situation is serious throughout Austria, especially in the private practice sector.
