Pupil strikes: “Teachers feel powerless”

The "Krone" report on the beating attack by a first-grader on his primary school teacher in Austria's southernmost province is making waves. Carinthia's director of education speaks openly about the current problems - and probably gets to the heart of the teachers.  

A six-year-old pupil from a migrant background goes berserk for no reason at an elementary school in Carinthia - attacking his teacher, punching her in the face and attacking a fellow pupil in the process. The police are alerted, the teacher receives medical treatment and, as a (temporary) consequence, the first-grader is suspended from school until the end of the fall break. It is still unclear what will happen to the boy.
