Like entire countries
A cell phone, for example, is hardly a problem yet - but it rarely comes alone, but with a whole host of possible applications. Depending on what we do with it, the amount of electricity it consumes increases dramatically. But how high exactly? Computer scientist Ivona Brandić revealed this and more to us as part of the new ÖAW science communication project FÄKT!
"The fact is, the internet is hungry," says computer scientist Ivona Brandić from the Vienna University of Technology. For around 20 years, she has been researching how computer applications can be implemented in such a way that they not only fulfill their function, but also require as few resources as possible. "Even without artificial intelligence (AI), the network consumes huge amounts of electricity and computing power," she says.
