CrowdStrike glitch
How an update could paralyze thousands of computers
Small cause, big effect: A faulty update in an IT security solution from the US company CrowdStrike caused massive outages in air traffic and numerous other areas worldwide on Friday. Krone+ on the background and the possible consequences.
Early on Friday morning, the first reports of system failures at airports made the rounds. Berlin, Vienna, Rome, Zurich, Hong Kong, Singapore and Los Angeles, among others, reported disruptions at check-in. Numerous flights were postponed or canceled due to the switch to manual operation, and passengers quickly queued at the terminals.
There were also problems at TV stations, which had to temporarily suspend their programs, hospitals, railroad companies and banks, whose payment terminals refused to work. After some initial confusion, the culprit was quickly identified.
