Not only does the construction industry consume large amounts of raw materials that do not grow back, it also sets a bad example in terms of energy use and land consumption. A rethink towards sustainable construction is urgently needed - experts such as Alexander Passer from Graz University of Technology are calling for this.

The construction industry is currently experiencing turbulent times. Price rises, supply problems and growing environmental awareness are making life difficult for the "building lions". But one thing is clear: things cannot stay as they are. The construction sector not only consumes huge quantities of non-renewable raw materials to produce concrete, steel or glass, for example, it also uses vast amounts of energy.
