A major operation involving several fire departments: Of all places, the fire station in Lieserhofen, in the Carinthian municipality of Seeboden, is engulfed in flames on Tuesday morning.

Emergency responders were alerted at 9:26 a.m.! Members of the fire departments from Gmünd, Kötzing, Lieserhofen, Tangern, Seeboden, Lendorf, Möllbrücke, Spittal, and Treffling battled the flames.

Surrounding buildings must be protected
This is a major fire. The challenge: protecting surrounding buildings. Two new fire trucks are housed in the building. “You could hear the gas cylinders stored in the fire station exploding; the windows were rattling,” neighbors reported.

New fire trucks completely destroyed
“The two emergency vehicles—a TLF tanker fire engine and a KLFA small fire engine—are completely destroyed. We’re talking about a total loss here. The vehicle hangar also fell victim to the flames,” according to emergency responders. The vehicles were new.

Large deployment of special response teams
In addition to the roughly 120 firefighters from the region, the police are also on site with the Cobra task force. “Gas cylinders were stored in the building. These are normally shot open to release the pressure, which is why the special unit was called in,” says Werner Mayer, the Spittal district police chief. This time, however, that measure could not be taken because it would have been too dangerous to enter the burning building.

Firefighting operations are underway. Several pockets of embers still need to be extinguished. According to the police, the fire is under control. The extent of the destruction has left a financial wasteland amounting to millions.

Deep Concern Among Emergency Responders
There is deep distress among the volunteer emergency responders. “It hurts to watch the building burn down. There was nothing we could do,” says Commander René Moser, deeply affected. “There’s so much passion, camaraderie, and volunteer spirit behind this,” he says, speaking on behalf of the 60 members of the Lieserhofen Volunteer Fire Department.

Now the focus is on finding solutions, rebuilding the building, and getting back into service.
