Surviving a plane crash is nothing short of a miracle. During that sightseeing flight on Sunday that ended in a crash in Lower Austria, a 15-year-old passenger even managed to free herself from the wreckage with almost no injuries. Two other passengers died.

It was supposed to be a special day in the life of 15-year-old Lea (name changed) following her confirmation. Her uncle had given her a sightseeing flight as a gift.

On Sunday, she set off from the Seitenstetten airfield in a four-seater propeller plane, accompanied by a friend and pilot Michael K., heading toward the Salzkammergut. Around 11:40 a.m.—as reported—engine failure brought the outing to a dramatic end.

Pilot and Woman Killed
The small plane crashed near Neuhaus in the Scheibbs district. Pilot Michael K. (47) and Sylvana G. (47) were killed in the crash. The girl managed to free herself from the wreckage. Lea and her uncle (41) were then rescued using a rope.

Dramatic: Shortly before the crash, the pilot reported a problem with the oil pressure over the radio. Austro Control advised an emergency landing at the nearest airfield in Mariazell. But the small plane did not make it that far. It crashed in the rugged terrain of the Ötscher region.

The wreckage was secured, and an autopsy of the pilot was ordered. Incidentally, the crashed Piper 28 was the first sport aircraft to successfully circumnavigate the Mediterranean.
