Vertessen tried out a lot as a young player, including in terms of position. "I tried to find out what I wanted to do. I tried it as a goalkeeper, but also as a striker. At some point, I had to make a decision," he explained in an interview. The decision fell on scoring goals instead of preventing goals. "My parents pushed me a bit to become a striker," he grins.
