Global trade under pressure
What Trump’s tariffs threaten the economy with
Tariffs up, taxes down - that is the policy of Donald Trump, who has now been inaugurated as US President for the second time. His protectionist trade policy will turn global trade upside down. Austria and the whole of Europe could lose the very export market that has been performing particularly well recently.
Donald Trump likes to exaggerate during election campaigns and overshoots many a target with his announcements. However, it became clear during his first term of office that when it comes to trade barriers, the politician usually delivers what he promises. He sees tariffs as an all-purpose weapon: they are supposed to save American industry, flush a lot of money into the state coffers and at the same time be a means of exerting pressure and an instrument of power.
The Republican will now be sworn in again as President of the United States on January 20. Even if it is not yet entirely clear what Trump's trade policy will look like in detail, the first measures are already emerging - and they are hitting Europe and Austria hard.
