Digitalization meets craftsmanship for Sebastian

As a toolmaking technology apprentice in his first year at voestalpine Precision Strip, Sebastian is already involved in the manufacture of special small series that are used in production.

After finishing polytechnic school, Sebastian decided to do an apprenticeship as a metal technician in toolmaking technology at voestalpine Precision Strip in Böhlerwerk. The 16-year-old actually wanted to go into the construction industry, but a trial apprenticeship convinced the Lower Austrian: "The apprenticeship even exceeded my expectations," says Sebastian.

In the first year of the apprenticeship, the activities are already very varied: "We clamp and set up workpieces so that we can start the eroding process. We then check and test various properties and apply hardness testing procedures." Digital processes also play a major role. "We write programs and start them," he explains.

Sebastian particularly enjoys working with CNC machines and starting a production process - "that's when it starts," he laughs. "You have to touch the workpiece and also cut manually and enter various commands after the start." In addition, the apprentices are already producing series for production, such as carbide or punching knives. "You're producing something that's useful for the company - that's very motivating."

Around 140 young professionals are trained at the voestalpine sites in Lower Austria.
