The American dream is alive. No US tennis player has won a Grand Slam title for 21 years. An alarming record for the former top nation in this sport. But at this US Open, hopes are higher than they have been for a long time to finally end this drought. Top-class opponents stumbled early on and with Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, two US aces are already in the quarter-finals.
Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick - no other nation can boast as many tennis stars as the USA. Winners were once produced there on an assembly line. 13 players have won 52 titles for the USA in the Open Era since 1968, when all players were allowed to take part in all Grand Slams. Both are absolute top figures.
