Radicalized Online
Why hatred is breaking out right now
Following Saturday evening’s terror rampage on the outskirts of Christopher Street Day in Berlin, in which one woman died and others were critically injured, many details are still under investigation. However, the suspected 21-year-old perpetrator is believed to have been radicalized online. Why his hatred is erupting right now—Krone+ provides the background.
The suspected perpetrator, Abdul Ballout, was born in Berlin in 2005, grew up there, and is a German citizen. He was already known to the authorities, among other things for aggravated assault and extortion with the intent to rob. The 21-year-old had been released from juvenile detention as recently as May. The police believe he is part of Berlin’s Islamist scene—and like so many of its followers, Ballout likely became radicalized online.
