The regional health agency has now confirmed some of these rumors to the "Krone" newspaper. Strong rumors about the future of the hospital in Gmünd have been circulating for a long time. These go and have gone far beyond a shortage of doctors and staff. Low patient utilization has also been repeatedly cited as a reason for serious infrastructural changes.

Probably the most serious and also the most hotly debated was the fear that the Waldviertler Landesklinikum would "degenerate into an old people's home" - in other words, that it would mainly be run as a "department for remobilization with accompanying services".
