Compensation for overcrowded trains in future
It's not just during the vacation season that rail travelers struggle with overcrowded trains. In future, they will at least be entitled to compensation in the same way as if a connection is completely canceled if they are not allowed to travel due to full carriages. The "Krone" explains what this means in concrete terms.
The problem is growing, as the railroads in Austria transported a record 328 million passengers last year, an increase of a good eleven percent compared to 2022. On average, each of these traveled 44.3 kilometers - also a historic high, according to the supervisory authority Schienen-Control. The available train sets are not always sufficient for this rush, and the frequent disruptions, especially in German rail traffic, are also spilling over to us.
