How ardent EU fans became skeptics
30 years after the referendum, we take a look around Ehrenhausen in Styria: In the then municipality of Retznei, now a district of Ehrenhausen, 84 percent voted in favor of joining the EU. Why were there so many supporters back then? And is the euphoria now dampened?
A sensational 84.6 percent of the population voted yes, only 15.4 percent voted no: in Retznei, the EU supporters celebrated a brilliant success in the referendum on EU accession on June 12, 1994. The municipality on the Wine Route thus set a record: No other Styrian town had more pro votes.
Exactly 30 years later, the mayor of Ehrenhausen, of which Retznei is now part, opens the doors of the municipal office to us. We ask Hannes Zweytick: "Is there still so much support for Europe?"
