Migration pact with Tunisia on the brink
Shortly before the EU summit, Italy's head of government Giorgia Meloni hurriedly traveled to Tunisia. In return for 900 million euros from the EU, the North African country is to take tougher action against people smugglers and illegal migration to Europe. But the deal is in jeopardy. The reasons for this lie in Albania, Russia and the USA.
When Italy's head of government Giorgia Meloni took office, she promised to put an end to illegal migration. Although the figures are comparatively higher than under her predecessor Mario Draghi, they have been falling since the beginning of the year. This is probably also due to the weather. But that is now set to change.
"The winter and spring storms are over, the sea is calming down - and according to the Italian government, tens of thousands of people are waiting to cross in North Africa," says Italy expert Nino Galetti from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Rome.
