The tricks of the vacancy tax

In many Styrian municipalities, the vacancy levy will apply for the first time this year. However, addressing the "right" empty apartments is apparently not so easy: many Styrian households fall under the exemptions - or become inventive in order to avoid the levy. 

When an 83-year-old minimum pension recipient in Dechantskirchen in eastern Styria received a letter from the local authority at the beginning of March, she could not believe her eyes: she was informed that a residential unit in her house was subject to a levy in accordance with the Styrian Vacancy Act. More than 1000 euros were assessed retroactively for the year 2023.
