The pictures went around the world: thousands of people in Germany lit up a joint legally for the first time at the Brandenburg Gate at midnight on April 1. This was made possible by a change in the German Narcotics Act. However, Austrians still need to be careful when smoking weed in their neighboring country.

The amendment to the law on cannabis legalization in Germany came into force on 1 April 2024. "Possession, consumption and home cultivation are now permitted," explains lawyer Sascha Flatz. Anyone is now allowed to have up to three plants and 50 grams of dried cannabis herb at home. However, smoking is not allowed in front of kindergartens, for example.
