400 pubs have closed in ten years

903 jobs are currently unfilled in the catering industry in Upper Austria, which is why one industry representative wants easier access to jobs for asylum seekers. However, it is not only the lack of staff that is causing problems for restaurants, but also the change in consumer behavior due to coronavirus.

"Corona has caused a certain system to develop out of necessity that has remained. Sunday dinners are now increasingly taking place in the garage and no longer in the pub. That's revenue that's missing," says Gerold Royder. For the catering industry representative in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, the change in consumer behavior is one reason why more and more restaurants are having to close.
