Satellite time-lapse:
This is how 120 days of war have devastated the Gaza Strip
War has been raging in the Gaza Strip for over 120 days. In response to Hamas terror on October 7, Israel launched massive bombardments and a ground offensive that is still ongoing - and has now reduced large parts of the Palestinian territory to rubble. Krone+ has created time-lapse videos from ESA satellite photos that clearly show the tragic consequences of the war.
Corey Scher from New York University and Jamon Van den Hoek from Oregon State University use freely available satellite photos from the ESA to determine the degree of destruction in wars and conflicts. They look for unusual height differences in buildings, which is an indication of damage. The US geographers have been using the method successfully for years, but the destruction in the Gaza Strip is frightening even for them. "We've worked on Ukraine, we've also looked at Aleppo in Syria and other cities, but the scale and speed of the damage in Gaza is remarkable."
