The Traunsee-Almtal Tourism Association and the municipality of Ebensee are warning about scams on hiking trails. Posters call for donations to preserve nature, but the money actually ends up in completely unknown accounts.

“The scam is always the same: Posters are hung on trees or benches. They call for donations to preserve hiking trails, playground equipment, or nature. However, this is a scam and not an official call for donations. “We’ve discovered that the money ends up somewhere in Slovakia,” warns Andreas Murray, executive director of the Traunsee-Almtal Tourism Association, regarding new scams on the hiking trails of the Salzkammergut.

Police Have Been Notified
“We don’t know exactly how many posters have been put up, but this is by no means an isolated incident,” the tourism official continues. He was alerted to a poster on the Miesweg trail in Gmunden by a hiker. Posters have also been spotted in Ebensee on the hiking trail leading to the Gassel Caves. The Ebensee municipality’s website warns of the scam. “Law enforcement has been notified,” explains Murray.
