Europol is sounding the alarm: In a notification to European countries, the police authority warns of a dangerous increase in extreme online cults that incite children and young people to violence - from cruelty to animals to (suicide) murder. The phenomenon of violent online exploitation, in particular the pressure on young people to join cults, has increased significantly in recent years, according to the so-called Intelligence Notification to partner authorities, in which Europol warns of the "increase in online cult communities dedicated to the extremely violent abuse of children".
The emergence of a "multitude of groups that use digital platforms to normalize extreme cruelty, blackmail victims and radicalize individuals to commit violent extremist acts" poses a "serious threat to public security", according to the Hague police authority.
