Refurbishment on schedule
Water is the biggest enemy of the Tauern Tunnel
After more than 100 years in operation, the Tauern Tunnel, the railroad tunnel of the Austrian Federal Railways, is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The working conditions are not easy. The important connection is therefore closed until the summer. A "Krone" local inspection.
Around 50 workers have been working simultaneously for a month on the renovation of the Tauern Tunnel - around the clock. 24 hours a day, seven days a week in shifts, in order to be finished by July. By then, the first phase of the major renovation of the structure, which was completed in 1909, should be finished and trains will once again be able to travel unhindered through the Tauern.
"The schedule is ambitious, but feasible," reports ÖBB project manager Christiane Schiavinato. No unexpected difficulties have yet arisen that could delay the work. However, the conditions for the workers, all specialists in their field, are anything but comfortable.
