“Of course, AI Jesus is overwhelmed by forgiveness”
In Switzerland, believers can meet Jesus - thanks to artificial intelligence. AI has already found its way into places of worship here too, albeit in other - usually less conspicuous - ways. Ingenious or mocking, danger or salvation: can a machine represent God? We talk to the Innsbruck diocesan bishop and art mediator Hermann Glettler.
Numerous conferences on artificial intelligence show that AI has long been a topic in our church, from chat GPT-supported sermons to AI conversation partners for the lonely. In Switzerland, an AI Jesus in the confessional is enjoying great popularity. The diocesan bishop of Innsbruck, Hermann Glettler, sees opportunities and risks in AI - but no replacement or "salvation" for our church.
"Authentic pastoral care requires people of flesh and blood," says the bishop responsible for art and culture in the Austrian Bishops' Conference. And that AI "cannot replace silence, amazement or human questioning". But read the full interview here:
