Afghanistan and Syria outnumber the entire EU

841 new citizens were naturalized in Styria in the first half of the year. New passports for Syrians and Afghans have risen particularly sharply - together they outnumber citizens from all EU countries. This prompts Governor Christopher Drexler to make a sharp demand.

Exactly 487 people living in Styria were granted Austrian citizenship in the first half of 2022, compared to 595 "new" Austrians in the same period last year - 841 people have been naturalized so far this year. If you take a closer look at the figures (see chart), it is striking that more people from Afghanistan (86) and Syria (82) were naturalized together than from all EU countries.
