Many tenants recently received letters with shocking content: up to 2500 euros in back payments are due for operating, heating and electricity costs! Why the letters were only sent out in the summer and where those affected can get support.
It's bad news for many tenants: Providers of electricity or heating are demanding additional costs from the previous year. Often "additional payments of well over 1000 euros" are due, says Karl Raith, head of the housing department in the consumer protection division of the Styrian Chamber of Labor.
"This is a catastrophe for many of those affected," emphasizes Barbara Walzl-Sirk. As Federal Chairwoman of the Tenants' Protection Association, she knows that some families simply cannot afford the additional payments all at once. The AK and the tenants' association are therefore currently receiving masses of desperate inquiries and complaints. Similar questions keep cropping up. Here are the answers.
