Birth balance: will Styria soon die out?

Never since 1945 has the birth deficit in Austria been as large as in 2023. And in only one federal state has the balance been more negative than in Styria. A cause for concern for our province, the labor market and our pension system?

10,339 births and 13,477 deaths: The result of this calculation is a big, fat minus. At minus 3160 in Styria, the birth balance (excluding immigration) is only more negative in Lower Austria. These figures, recently published by Statistics Austria, also mean that in 2023 Austria had the largest birth deficit since the Second World War.
