Why we still need a Pride Month in 2024

June is Pride Month, a time dedicated to ending all forms of discrimination against queer people. In an era of same-sex marriage and protective laws, shouldn’t that be a thing of the past? Unfortunately, reality paints a very different picture.

In June 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York, resisted a police raid and the resulting police violence. Tensions escalated rapidly, and the city’s entire gay and lesbian community organized into neighborhood uprisings that lasted three days. During this time, gay rights movements emerged, as did the Pride parades that are popular in many cities today, where people from the LGBTQ+ community celebrate with the world their ability to be themselves.
