Why we still need a Pride Month in 2024
The Rainbow Parade is taking place in Vienna today and June is Pride Month, which stands for the end of all discrimination against queer people. In times of same-sex marriage and protective laws, this should actually be superfluous, right? Unfortunately, the reality paints a very different picture.
In June 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn gay bar in New York resisted a raid and the police violence that accompanied it. Tensions quickly escalated, and the city's entire gay and lesbian community organized itself in neighbourhood riots that lasted for three days. During this time, gay rights movements and the Pride parades that are popular in many cities today, where people from the LGBTQ+ community celebrate being themselves with the world, emerged.
