Controversial ideas in the fight against unemployment

April 30 is Unemployment Day - it is intended to draw attention to the sometimes difficult situation of those affected, like Monika M.. In March of this year, 369,640 people in Austria were looking for a job, and many are in a bad way. Politicians are debating how to solve the problem.

According to the definition of the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS), anyone who is involuntarily out of work and available to the labor market is considered unemployed. This means that if you are not looking after your children or have to care for relatives, are still studying or are considered unfit for work, you do not appear in the statistics as unemployed.
