Why Tesla’s rival is entering the cell phone business
Tesla rival Polestar, which belongs to Volvo's parent company Geely from China, has joined the ranks of smartphone manufacturers and is now selling a companion smartphone for its electric cars - the Polestar Phone. And the car manufacturer seems to be serious about it, installing high-end technology and calling out a price for the device of around 950 euros, which is affordable compared to a car.
The Polestar Phone is not the first smartphone to bear the logo of a car manufacturer. In recent years, Chinese manufacturers have taken advantage of the strong emotional connection that many consumers have developed with car brands. Huawei enticed consumers with Porsche smartphones, rival Oppo has Lamborghini Edition devices and its subsidiary brand Realme has phones with racing stripes. Vivo also joined in - and is relying on the appeal of BMW for its premium brand iQOO. Krone+ analyzes why the Polestar cell phone is nevertheless a turning point.
