Scrap for the Commission
“EU inspectors” could inspect our cars
The EU election campaign is picking up speed. According to the FPÖ, "EU inspectors" could soon classify our used cars as "environmentally harmful end-of-life vehicles" more quickly - and take them off the road. The economic considerations behind the proposal and how the FPÖ wants to thwart the plans.
The European Commission's proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on requirements for the circular design of vehicles and on the disposal of end-of-life vehicles was drafted last year. It was submitted on July 13, 2023. It is currently being examined in the European Parliament. A vote before the EU elections on June 9 is no longer possible, but the FPÖ's hope of preventing the regulation altogether with a potentially strong result in the EU elections is more relevant than ever.
Once again, the Freedom Party sees this as an "attack on motorists". Owners of classic cars or even young used cars could "pay extra", all used car owners could soon be "controlled" by Brussels. But what is it all about in detail?
