Traffic jams are unfortunately part and parcel of traveling by car. Accidents are often the cause. In the "Krone" newspaper, the fire department now explains the reason behind the large-scale road closures - and what to do in the event of an accident.

"The fire department doesn't close a road for fun!" Christian Pfeiffer, commander of the fire department in Wiener Neustadt, has clear words for all critics. It is not uncommon for the volunteers to have to deal with insults from drivers and other onlookers. Yet every second counts for the rescuers in an emergency. But it is not only the safety of the victims that is at stake when an accident site is cordoned off; the firefighters themselves are also sometimes in mortal danger when providing technical assistance.
