What the European Court of Justice did in December 2023 when it backed the project. The major soccer associations FIFA and UEFA may not make other competitions dependent on their approval and may not prohibit clubs and players from participating in these competitions, the ECJ ruled. The rules granting FIFA and UEFA exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of the rights to the competitions would also restrict competition in the EU, the ruling stated.
UEFA's choice of weapons was remarkably aggressive at the start of the project. Now there is a new openness, with many clubs extending a hand.
