Architectural masterpiece houses 4000 eggs

The egg museum in Winden am See resembles a gigantic glass display case embedded in a rural idyll. 4000 eggs from all cultures, eras and continents can be found there. The museum even won the architecture prize of the province of Burgenland. 

One of four watermills, built in 1856, stood at the foot of the Leitha Mountains in Winden am See. Wander Bertoni, one of Europe's most renowned sculptors, acquired it in 1965 and began to expand it as his studio in Grinzing had become too small. A special kind of art venue was created on the old cultural ground - Wander Bertoni's open-air museum. During the renovation, his wife Waltraut Bertoni was always at his side. "Our love of art brought us together and brought us to this inspiring place," says the now 83-year-old.
