Allegations of abuse
Paul Haggis will not have to stand trial in Italy
Director and screenwriter Paul Haggis ("L.A. Crash") will in all likelihood not have to stand trial following allegations of abuse in Italy.
The public prosecutor's office in the southern Italian city of Brindisi has requested that the case against the 70-year-old Oscar winner be dropped. The authority confirmed corresponding media reports on Tuesday.
Allegations of abuse against Haggis
Haggis was arrested in June 2022 on charges of sexually assaulting a 30-year-old British woman for days in a hotel during a film festival in the Apulia region. He was released a few days later. Haggis denied all accusations from the outset.
In the USA last year, the Canadian was sentenced to ten million dollars (9.22 million euros) in fines and compensation for the rape of a press agent.
Awarded an Oscar
In 2006, the filmmaker was awarded Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture Producer for the episodic drama "L.A. Crash". He also wrote the screenplays for the James Bond films "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace".
