Card payments are on the rise. Nevertheless, Austrians still prefer to pay with bills and coins. After the coronavirus pandemic, they are even turning to cash more often again.

"Cash is king", as the old saying goes. But then came digitalization. In addition to card payments, other payment methods are now also possible. The coronavirus pandemic, which began in spring 2020, did the rest. While the demand for coins and bills rose sharply at the beginning, the electronic payment method ultimately prevailed. Not least because cash fell into disrepute as a virus spreader during the pandemic.
