Provocative Act

Flower Arrangement for Honorary Citizen at Hitler’s Grave in Leonding

A floral arrangement at the abandoned Hitler grave in the Leonding parish cemetery caused visitors around All Saints’ Day to shake their heads in disbelief and outrage. This was because the two ribbons attached to it bore the inscriptions “To the Honorary Citizen” and “City of Leonding.” It is unclear who is behind the act.

For more than 100 years, the remains of Alois (died 1903) and Klara (died 1907) had rested in the parish cemetery in Leonding. Since the grave site had repeatedly been misused by reactionaries and neo-Nazis for far-right propaganda, it had to be abandoned in 2012. Since then, the plot has not been reallocated; only a patch of grass is visible.

The Perpetrators Were Well-Informed
Unknown individuals, who apparently still know exactly where Hitler’s grave was located, left a disturbing message there around All Saints’ Day. They placed a floral arrangement there in which the city of Leonding commemorated “the honorary citizen.”

City reacted quickly
Following complaints, city employees quickly removed the floral wreath—including its ribbons—and a mourning candle that had also been placed there.

“On behalf of the city of Leonding, I categorically distance myself from this despicable and deeply contemptible provocation. There must be no place for any form of glorification or trivialization of National Socialism,” Mayor Sabine Naderer-Jelinek made clear.

It is unclear who orchestrated this “honorary citizen” stunt. Robert Eiter, spokesperson for the Network Against Right-Wing Extremism, is calling on the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution to take up this case.
