Four winter sports enthusiasts lost their lives in a tragic avalanche accident in Großarl on January 17, 2026. They were part of a seven-person Alpine Club group led by an experienced mountain guide. Nearly ten months later, the district attorney’s office has closed the investigation.

On that fateful January day, the seven-member, experienced Alpine Club group was heading toward the 2,214-meter-high Throneck. Suddenly, the group was caught off guard and buried by an avalanche 150 meters wide and about 250 meters long: Two men from Tyrol (ages 63 and 65), a woman from Styria (age 60), and a man from Upper Austria (age 53) lost their lives in the incident.

“No Breach of Duty of Care”
The course instructor, a woman from Salzburg (58), was unharmed. The Salzburg District Attorney’s Office launched a preliminary investigation against her on suspicion of negligent homicide. But it is now clear: there will be no criminal consequences for the woman.

“The investigation has been closed. No breach of duty of care could be proven, as the avalanche was unforeseeable,” Ricarda Eder of the public prosecutor’s office confirmed to the “Krone.” An expert had prepared a report on the matter at the request of the judicial authorities.

At the time of the accident, the avalanche warning level was 2 on a five-point scale. Furthermore, all participants in the tour were experienced mountaineers—and all were equipped with appropriate avalanche gear.
