On Sunday afternoon, a small plane carrying four people crashed in Gaming (Scheibbs district) in Lower Austria. For the pilot (47) and a woman of the same age, help came too late; a 15-year-old girl and a 41-year-old man were seriously injured. Firefighters, paramedics, police, and other emergency responders were deployed in large numbers. The cause may have been a technical malfunction.

At 11:40 a.m., the alarm went off for emergency responders in southern Lower Austria. Shortly before that, members of the youth fire department—of all people—had witnessed the plane crash while driving home from a regional meeting in Küb. Their supervisors immediately set the rescue chain in motion.

The Piper PA-28 crashed into a wooded area about 100 meters from the village of Neuhaus. For the pilot and one female passenger, help came too late; another man (41) and a teenage girl (15) survived but were seriously injured. All are from the Amstetten district.

For emergency responders, it was a race against time. The crash site could not be pinpointed at first. “We first had to gain access to the fairly steep terrain,” explains Philipp Pflügl of the Scheibbs District Fire Department.

Rugged Terrain
Using chainsaws, the firefighters fought their way toward the small aircraft; they also had to cross a stream. The heavy rescue equipment had to be hauled across the terrain by the firefighters. “It took us a while to find the crash site,” says Pflügl, referring to the mountainous terrain. Since there is no cell phone reception in the area, the emergency responders had to communicate via radio.

To the hospital by rope
Ninety firefighters were on the scene, along with mountain rescue, emergency medical services, and police. There, they found a completely destroyed aircraft. The seriously injured were evacuated from the crash site via rope rescue and flown to hospitals in Linz and Amstetten. The crash site was cordoned off, and the aviation accident investigation board was still on site Sunday afternoon. The crashed aircraft will likely also have to be recovered by helicopter.

Was a technical malfunction the cause?
The aircraft was a Piper PA-28. It had taken off from the Seitenstetten airfield. According to initial reports, a technical malfunction may have been the cause. Eyewitnesses reportedly heard unusual engine noises. The district attorney’s office has ordered an autopsy of the pilot.
